SS Thorfinn Liveaboard

Explore the WWII wrecks of Truk Lagoon

SS Thorfinn

Dive RIBs, SS Thorfinn

SS Thorfinn liveaboard

Over 70 dive sites, most of them ships, are to be found within the confines of Truk Lagoon, making it the wreck diving capital of the world. Most wreck sit in their defined anchorages – the Fourth Fleet, the Sixth Fleet and the Repair Anchorages of the Imperial Japanese Navy. These wrecks now lie in an area of less than 20 sq miles and on a one week holiday on the SS Thorfinn you can dive 30 or more wrecks! The guides from this liveaboard are experts at exploring the wrecks and they will guide you safely around the decks and holds to discover hidden relics, including Japanese Zero aircraft, mines, trucks and tanks. The SS Thorfinn can be thought of as half liveaboard and half floating resort. During a one week stay the SS Thorfinn will move to 2 or 3 central anchor points within the lagoon and then smaller RIBs will ferry divers from these anchorages to the various wrecks.

The SS Thorfinn runs 2 ‘state of art’ 10 metre/30 foot launches supplied with two 150 hp 4 stroke engines providing fast, quiet rides to the dive sites. They have numerous custom features such as seat edge lighting, fresh water showers, under-seat gear bins, easy access dive stairs, camera shelves, depth sounders, GPS and VHF radios. Two additional speedy 24 foot fiberglass twin engine boats, guarantee frequent and variable dive sites for separate diver parties. Fresh towels and cool water are immediately handed to guests on re-boarding dive launch for the short journey back to the SS Thorfinn.

Back onboard the SS Thorfinn a dedicated dining lounge provides seating for 22 guests. Friendly dining room staff serve breakfast cooked to order and other meals a la carte. Two chefs create a variety of delicious meals and daily fresh baked goods, with attention paid to all dietary needs. A spacious comfortably furnished guest lounge features a multi system Plasma TV with DVD player, a CD player with IPOD connection, and a surround sound 4 way speaker system. A well stocked DVD and paperback book library, magazine rack, reference books (fish, wrecks) are all available for guest use. The bar provides a range of beverages – from coffee, tea, hot chocolate and soft drinks, to beers, wines and spirits. Eleven air conditioned staterooms accommodate 22 guests in double occupancy. All have in room vanities, TV’s and DVD players, and full length closets. Eight rooms have double or queen size beds plus adjacent single berths. Private showers and toilets are fitted in each of these rooms. Three additional rooms are bright and spacious with two shared shower rooms and two shared toilets.

The Spa deck is favoured after a dive or late at night with both south and northern constellations in clear view. A large commercial sized hot tub seats 12 persons by design, but has been know to seat up to 26! Powerful jets can help to massage away any aches or strains at the end of another busy days diving. The sun deck is a popular daytime haunt, with sun loungers for sun addicts. An overhead shade canopy provides cool shade while reading a book or enjoying a magnificent view of Truk Lagoon.

The SS thorfinn has two large 3 tiered camera service and storage tables with a compressed air gun for cleaning and maintenance of camera equipment, located adjacent to the main guest lounge. Each table has dual voltage 110V and 220V charging points. Each of the larger dive launches have custom built camera tables and rinsing pails aboard to safely transport your equipment to and from each dive site.
