Tufi Resort in PNG is a personalized boutique resort, nestled atop a breath-taking fjord, with 180º panoramic views of the sea, fjords and mountains. The resort is located in Oro Province 250 miles due east of the capital Port Moresby and only 80 miles from the famous Kokoda Trail. The resort’s local chefs do a wonderful job creating daily set menus, utilising the freshest, seasonal mainland and local produce available, with a strong emphasis on reef fish and seafood. Diving with Tufi Resort
From Tufi Resort you can dive a variety of sites, including tropical fjords, outer reefs and WWII wrecks. When scuba diving the fjords, you can find unique macro critters such as gobies, nudibranchs, shrimps, mandarin fish, ghost pipefish and pygmy seahorse. The fjords are also home to WWII PT boat wrecks that can be easily dived. As there is very little current movement in the fjords, many sponges and coral species grow prolifically and there are some very large sponges and shelf corals in the fjords that are not common on the outer reefs.
Five to ten nautical miles offshore lies a string of reefs – ‘bommies’ – that come up from a staggering depth of up to 600m to a nice safety-stop level of 7-5m below the surface. The outer reefs normally have very good visibility and spectacular marine life in abundance, including schooling barracuda and reef fish, a variety of sharks including Hammerheads and an abundance of critters, ideal for macro photography. The majority of reefs in the region remain unexplored and it will be some time before the full diversity of the Tufi reefs is known. Favourite outer reef dive sites include Cyclone Cay, Black Rocks, Stewarts Reef and Shark Tip. From Tufi Resort you can also dive the famous Dutch cargo ship the ‘S Jacob’ or ‘Blackjack’ – an intact B17 bomber – as specialty charter dives.
