Fiji is a South Pacific paradise that every diver should have on their ‘must do’ list. As famous for its stunning soft coral dives as it is for it adrenaline pumping shark dives, this nation of over 330 islands has something to offer every diver. Being an island nation the best way to explore its diverse dive sites is by liveaboard venturing into Bligh Water, the Lomaiviti Islands group and north to the Somosomo Strait and the Tavenui Islands.
The Lomaviti group of islands contains many names synonymous with divers – Namena, Koro, Gau, Wakaya are some of the most famous islands which are home to legendary dives sites such as Nigali Passage, ‘North Save a Tack’ and Shark Fin Point. The Lomaiviti Islands offer everything a seasoned diver could wish for from macro delights to big schools of pelagics, Grey Reef Sharks, Hammerheads, Eagle Rays and Mantas. Spread throughout the Koro Sea the Lomaiviti Islands offer endless diving opportunities over a large area of ocean. To the west of the Koro Sea is Bligh Water and whereas the Koro Sea is dominated by island dives, Bligh Water is famed for its submerged pinnacle diving. These pinnacles are washed by nutrient rich waters and the fish life that makes a home here truly reflects the oceans fertility. The most famous dive site in Bligh Water is called E-6 and it is as famous for its many spectacular photo opportunities as it is for its very big fish life! The Somosomo Strait runs between the islands of Tavenui and Vanua Levu and it is undoubtedly one of the most famous dive destinations in Fiji. Why? It is largely due to the spectacular soft corals that exist at some of its most revered dive sites such as The Great White Wall and Rainbow Reef. It is these sites that have earned Fiji recognition as the ‘Soft Coral Capital of the World’! These beautiful corals of course attract a multitude of fish life in all shape and sizes, from small darting Anthias to swooping Mantas – these are dives sites you will remember for the rest of your life!
