The Philippines comprises 7107 islands that offer some of the best diving in the World, from the big fish diving of Tubbataha Reef and Malapascua Island to the amazing critter dives in Anilao and Dumaguete! Most destinations in the Philippines can be dived from either liveaboard or resort but the one exception is Tubbataha Reef which is a liveaboard only destination. Tubbataha Reef is located 150 km off the coast of Palawan province and is only accessible from March to May each year. At Tubbataha Reef vertical walls and dramatic drop offs provide a home for plenty of big fish including Whale Sharks, Guitar Sharks, Tiger Sharks, Hammerheads and large schools of pelagic fish!
Over at Malapascua Island the headlines are all about their Thresher Sharks and this is indeed the only place in the world where one can reliably dive with Thresher Sharks on a daily basis. Malapascua is not all about Thresher Sharks though, it has an amazing array of marine life both big and small – from Mantas to Mandarin fish! Anilao and Dumaguete fight it out to be crowned the Philippines premier critter destination but it’s too close to call! If you have a critter list you can tick off an amazing number of creatures with a visit to either or both of these world class macro destinations. Anilao’s coastline is home to many amazing critter dives and it also has a dive site called Twin Rocks where Jacks school in huge numbers. At Dumaguete the critter sites are concentrated at Dauin Marine Sanctuary whilst offshore Apo Island and Siquijor Island offer wall dives with stunning corals, schooling fish, Sea Snakes and Turtles.
